Want to learn more about the IPRC or become a member? Join us for an orientation. Orientation occurs every 2nd Thursday of the month at 7 PM. Required for new users. Free, open to all ages. The 10th annual Southern Girls Convention will be held in Gainesville, Fla., in July (exact date and location, TBA). The Southern Girls Convention is an annual grassroots meeting for networking, organizing, educating, agitating, and activism, devoted to empowering women, girls, and transfolks in the South, and to furthering the struggle for social justice. Each year’s convention is hosted by a different Southern community and facilitated by local organizers. Hundreds of activists will meet for a weekend of discussion, action, and entertainment devoted to building a feminist community in the South. The International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women: Mundos de Mujeres / Women’s Worlds Conference will include a workshop called Grrrl Zines: Feminist Self-Publishing Across the Globe. Presented by Jenny Gunnarson-Payne (UK), Rosa Reitsamer (Austria), Elena Stöhr (Germany) and Elke Zobl (Austria), this workshop will discuss how and why grrrl zines are read, published, and exchanged in many countries and will include the collaborative creation of a short zine. The workshop will explore the various communication and networking strategies of international grrrl zinesters and what it means to make and distribute feminist zines. This conference, hosted at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, will include numerous programs on issues such as gender equality, gender studies, networks, and women’s issues. The Twin Cities Zinefest brings zinesters and indie music fans to Minneapolis for a two-day celebration of DIY culture. The fifth annual Zinefest will be held July 12-13 at Stevens Square Center for the Arts, at the corner of 3rd Ave. South and 19th St. The event features an art show, craft demonstrations, live music, guest speakers, and panel discussions, plus some of the Midwest’s best self-made talent. The IPRC is accepting registrations for Zine Camp 2008. Camp is July 15 to August 15, on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 12-5 p.m. The campers meet at the Independent Publishing Resource Center (http://iprc.org/) in downtown Portland. Camp is geared towards self-expression and empowerment through open access to space, information and materials necessary to create your own projects. Campers will be privy to all sorts of insider information on how and why to publish their own work. They’ll learn the history of zines, meet real live zinesters, participate in readings, take workshops in zine construction and design, go on field trips, and participate in the seventh annual Zine Symposium. Cost of enrollment is $125, with scholarships available. Campers should be between the ages of 12 and 17. Preference is given to first time campers. The San Francisco Zine Fest will be returning on July 19-20 for its seventh annual celebration of small press, zines, comics, and all things DIY in an even bigger and better new location: The San Francisco County Fair Building, Lincoln Way at 9th Avenue in Golden Gate Park. Special guests, exhibitors, workshops, and so much more, with twice the exhibition space as last year. Admission will be FREE. Table registration is now open; costs are $30 for a half-table or $60 for a full table, if you register before June 15. A temporary or permanent California’s seller permit is also required. Pens, Pencils and Photocopiers! - A Comics and Zine Event will be held on July 19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at The Plough, 27 Museum St. in London. Bringing together comics and zine creators from all over the country to showcase their work in London in a celebration of self publishing. Lots of activities on the day including live drawing - take part in drawing competitions with the artists on an overhead projector! All this right next door to London’s famous Cartoon Museum. The Portland Zine Symposium will be held August 23-24 at the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland, OR. This year’s theme is: Back to DIY, Back to Community, Back to Roots. The Portland Zine Symposium aims to create greater communication and community between diverse creators of independent media and art. This fun, free and open event helps people promote their work and share skills and information related to zines and zine culture. Through hands-on and discussion-based workshops, the conference will explore the role and effect of all types of zines in and on underground and mainstream culture. The Symposium includes workshops, panel discussions, community meal fixings, and several tables for networking, selling and trading zines. Admission is free. Volunteers needed. This Is Not Art is Australia’s premier independent, emerging, and experimental arts festival held annually in Newcastle, NSW. This year’s festival will be October 2-6. This Is Not Art is comprised of four festivals that cover electronic music and culture, independent music, critical thinking, and all kinds of writing. The 2008 Small Press Expo will be held October 4-5 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel and Conference Center. One day admission is $8, or $15 for the weekend. The Alternative Press Expo is moving to the fall! This year, APE will be held November 1-2 at the Concourse in San Francisco. The most popular show of its kind in the country, with over 300 exhibitors and 4,800 attendees in 2007, APE features an incredible gathering of the very best in indy, alternative, and self-published comics, books, and zines.
